Online Burlesque Classes - Q&A with Poppy Cherry

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

Thanks to everyone who attended our LIVE Q&A session with our director Poppy Cherry on Sunday night - it was lovely to see everyone's faces and hear their voices!

Plenty of interesting questions were raised. Read on for a summary of what was discussed, and a few extra anticipated FAQ's we through in for good measure.

Q: Are all the Maison Burlesque classes moving to online? What about workshops?

A: Yes all our Term 2 Showcase and Tech classes will be online from Monday 30th March. We guarantee the first four weeks of term will be online, we will assess and follow government recommendations as to whether our last 4 weeks of term will be online (it's quite likely that they will). We will be looking at our upcoming workshops and making a decision on a case by case basis as to whether to move online or postpone them. We will be adding extra free tutorials on our Youtube channel and may be launching some new online interactive workshops in the coming weeks (stay tuned!)

Q: What tech do I need to be able to participate?

A: The absolute minimum you need is a mobile phone. The ideal setup is a laptop. If you're tech savvy you might use a desktop computer with external webcam and mic.

Q: How much space do I need? How should I set up my space?

A: You'll need to clear a space at least the size of a yoga mat. If you have a little more space then a cleared space of 2-3m squared is going to be fabulous! Set your device (phone/laptop) on a raised surface such as bench, shelf or table so its in a fixed position and you can be hands-free. If you can choose your lighting configuration you'll want light shining on you from the front, not behind.

Q: Where will teachers be streaming their classes from?

A: Most of our teachers will be streaming from their own homes but sometimes a class might be streamed from the studio.

Q: How many students will there be in the Maison Burlesque online classrooms?

A: In our paid Term classes, our maximum student numbers are unchanged. This means a maximum of 9 students for fan dance, 10 for chair and 12-14 for dance based classes. Some classes will be smaller than this but never bigger. This means you'll still get plenty of personalised attention from your teachers. The exception for this is our free classes which can hold around 50-odd students.

Q: What happens if I miss a class? Will the classes be recorded?

A: Great news! If you miss a class you will have access to a full recording of the entire class so you can complete the lesson in your own time. These will only be available for 48 hours following the class though, so make sure to get in quick to view it!

Q: Will students be recorded? Who can view the class recordings?

A: Students have the option to turn off their video if they do not wish to be recorded. By default, the active speaker is who is recolrded, which most of the time will be your teacher. If a teacher were to ask you to talk or demonstrate something you would be recorded for only that time. The recordings are strictly only to be viewed by the teacher and students enroled in this class, and the recordings are only saved for 48 hours after that they will be removed.

Q: Can I still 'drop-in' or use my casual pass to join tech classes?

A: Yes you can! We just ask students to sign up via our bookeo system at least 30 minutes before the class start time so we can send you the link to join the online class.

Q: How will Showcase classes be run?

A: Teachers will still teach a full performance choreography. What will be different is you will see more focus on individual technique and characterisation rather than movements about group formations etc. Students will be encouraged to create simple costumes using items they already have at home. We are not sure as yet what will happen with our end of term showcase. In an ideal situation we will just delay the show until a later date. There may also be opportunities to perform online for your classmates.

Q: How can I improve my dodgy internet connection?

A: Reserve the time' in your household so all other devices that use internet are off (no netflix, fb, gaming, someone else using a computer etc).

Ensure all other web apps and browsers on your computer are closed, and you dont have any background sync'ing happening on onedrive, dropbox etc.

If you have different devices (phone/laptop etc) try them all to see if it is a device rather than connection issue.

Many ISPs are offering boosted internet packages right now so see what yours is offering.
